格里摩出生於 1973 年,5 歲開始學習小提琴,1993 年於就讀法國巴黎國立高等音樂學院(Conservatoire national supérieur de musique)期間,得到小提琴與室內樂大賽的首獎,而後繼續追隨小提琴大師巴斯基耶(Régis Pasquier)學習。取得學位後,更接受被譽為「小提琴奇才」的明茲(Shlomo Mintz)與已故小提琴大師史坦(Isaac Stern)等多位優秀大師級演奏家的指導。接著前往巴黎的政治科學研究院(École des Sciences Politiques in Paris)繼續研讀。

在一個偶然的機會下,格里摩幸運地結識 1967 年伊莉沙白國際小提琴大賽首獎得主的小提琴家赫胥宏(Philippe Hirschhorn,與赫胥宏同年參賽的小提琴家克萊曼為第三名),日後成為影響其演奏風格的良師益友。赫胥宏從日常生活中的哲理啟發並引導格里摩思索,而為了持續向這崇高的音樂理想前進,格里摩視這項任務為漫長的旅程,包括與他所成立的奧菲歐四重奏(Orfeo Quartet)一同練習,安排在法國音樂節上演出貝多芬 16 首弦樂四重奏全集,也是必經的路徑之一。

格里摩的演奏風格純淨自然,豐富的內涵與精湛的技巧使樂曲更具完整的藝術性,讓他受邀至世界各地以獨奏家或室內樂合奏的身分演出,足跡遍及瑞士、日本、韓國、香港、台灣、紐約、維也納等地,而以巴黎為主要舞台。另外,格里摩曾與許多世界知名的頂尖樂團合作演出,包括巴黎管弦樂團(Orchestre de Paris,克里斯多福‧艾森巴哈、米歇爾・普拉松指揮)、法國國家廣播愛樂交響樂團(Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France,斯坦尼斯勞斯・斯可羅維斯夫基、拉斐爾・福魯貝克・迪・布爾戈斯指揮)、由艾曼紐‧克里文指揮的國立里昂管弦樂團(Orchestre National de Lyon)與里昂歌劇院管弦樂團(Orchestre de l’Opéra de Lyon)、圖魯茲首都交響樂團(Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse,雅布・凡・茨維頓指揮)、薩爾茲堡莫札特學院樂團(Salzburg Mozarteum,胡伯・蘇丹指揮)、柏林交響樂團(Berliner Sinfonie,史蒂芬・斯隆指揮)、佛羅里達愛樂(Florida Philharmonic,馬蒂亞斯・巴默特指揮)、華沙小交響樂團(Sinfonia Varsovia,麥可・舒萬德、彼德・恰巴指揮)、英國室內管弦樂團(English Chamber Orchestra,詹姆士・朱特指揮)、台北市立交響樂團等樂團,以及與布達佩斯、布加勒斯特、巴塞爾(海因里希・席夫指揮)、蒙地卡羅、里斯本的古柏金漢基金會(羅倫斯・佛斯特指揮)、都柏林、墨西哥等地樂團合作演出。

此外,格里摩也經常與許多優秀的音樂家以室內樂的型態一同舉行演奏會,合作的音樂家,包含中提琴家巴許梅特(Yuri Bashmet)、鋼琴家貝瑞佐夫斯克(Boris Berezovsk)、鋼琴家阿法納席夫(Valery Afanassiev)、中提琴家柯賽(Gérard Caussé)、長笛演奏家詹姆斯・高威(James Galway)、鋼琴家普雷內(Alain Planès)、大提琴家菲力普斯(Xavier Phillips)、大提琴家王健(Jian Wang)、鋼琴家貝洛夫(Michel Béroff)、法國鋼琴家杜夏布雷(François René Duchable)、大提琴家柯沛(Marc Coppey)、鋼琴家安傑立克(Nicholas Angelich)、法國小提琴家兼大提琴家賈斯汀內爾(Anne Gastinel),以及鋼琴家路易斯(Paul Lewis)等。

積極參與當代音樂的格里摩,使得許多作曲家將作品題獻給他,包括布里斯・普塞特(Brice Pauset)、德瑞・伊斯蓋(Thierry Escaich)、尚-富蘭索瓦・齊格(Jean-François Zygel)、亞歷山大・卡斯帕羅夫(Alexander Gasparov)、維克多・季辛(Victor Kissine)、棚田文紀(Fiminori Tanada)與梅那赫姆・祖爾(Menachem Zur)等。2005 年並以上述七位作曲家的獨奏曲為曲目,出版現場演奏的 DVD。另外,格里摩和奧菲歐四重奏首演了馬克-安德烈・達巴維(Marc-André Dalbavie)的第一號弦樂四重奏;與法國國家廣播愛樂交響樂團演出普塞特的小提琴協奏曲,並與國立里昂管弦樂團合作伊斯蓋的小提琴協奏曲。

除了獨奏家的身分,格里摩於 2004 年創立了「不和諧」樂團(Les Dissonnances),成員包括許多歐洲主要室內樂團體的演奏家,以及多位年輕具潛質的音樂演奏者,這個樂團為沒有指揮、隨曲目調整編制的管弦樂團。不和諧樂團的首張錄音史特勞斯的死與變容,即獲得國際出版業者的讚揚。格里摩對弦樂四重奏的熱衷,也讓他創立了奧菲歐四重奏,並為其中之一,其它成員還包括小提琴家波納尼(Floriane Bonanni)、麗絲.貝爾多(Lise Berthaud)與大提琴家法蘭西斯・沙洛(François Salque)。目前格里摩是勒阿弗爾港(Le Havre)以及第戎歌劇院(Dijon Opera)的常駐藝術家。

大衛・格里摩於 1996 年在維也納獲得歐洲文化獎(The Prix Européen pour la culture),並於愛樂音樂廳(Wiener Musikverein)頒獎典禮上演出;2008 年獲頒藝術文化騎士勳章(Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres)。而格里摩目前使用的是1710年的史特拉底瓦里名琴。

The French violinist, David Grimal, began playing the violin at the age of five. He won the First Prize in violin and chamber music at the Paris Conservatory in 1993. Afterwards he did his postgraduate studies with Régis Pasquier at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Paris, he participated in several master-classes most notably those of Isaac Stern and Schlomo Mintz. His fortuitous meeting with Philippe Hirschorn, the man who was to become his mentor, was decisive both musically and in that it opened the doors to an international career. More recently, he won the European Community Prize -1996, the European Radio Union Prize -1996, and received the “Credit National" Fellowship Award. He was also honored as the Classical discovery of the MIDEM 1997.

David Grimal has performed the main European cities and around the world (Asia, Australia, the Americas and Africa). He has performed as a soloist and in chamber ensembles in Switzerland, Japan, Korea, Hong-Kong, Taiwan, New York (Lincoln Center), Vienna (Musikverein), as well as on the main stages in Paris (Theatre du Chatelet, Theatre des Champs-Elysees, Auditorium du Louvre, Radio-France ...) and in such festivals as Ravinia, The Casals Festival in Puerto Rico, Menton, Festival de Musique en mer, Radio-France Montpellier, Prades, Risor, Stavanger, Schwäbische Frühling, Colmar, Menton, les Folles Journées… He has given radio and television performances on various European channels.

As a well-acclaimed soloist, David Grimal has been invited to perform with numerous great orchestras including: the Orchestre de Paris (Christoph Eschenbach, M. Plasson), Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France (Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, R. Frübeck de Burgos), Orchestre National de Lyon, Opéra de Lyon (E. Krivine), Capitole de Toulouse (Jap van Sweden), Mozarteum de Salzbourg (H. Soudan), Berliner Sinfonie (S. Sloane), Florida Philharmonic (Matthias Bamert), English Chamber Orchestra (J. Judd), Budapest, Bucarest, Basel (H. Schiff), Monte Carlo, Fondation Gulbenkian Lisbonne (Lawrence Foster) Sinfonia Varsovia (M. Schonwandt, P. Csaba) Ulster Orchestra, Dublin, Taipei, Moscow Virtuosi, Stockholm Chamber Orchestra, Warsaw Symphony, Bavarian Chamber Orchestra, I Musici di Padova, Montpellier Philharmonic, Cannes Symphony, Avignon Symphony Orchestra, and Paris Conservatory Orchestra…

David Grimal has given chamber music performances with Youri Bashmet, Boris Berezovsky, Gerard Causse, James Galway, Christoph Henkel, Paul Meyer, Karoly Moscari, Pascal Moragues, Raphael Oleg, Regis and Bruno Pasquier, Jean-Claude Penne Tier, Xavier Phillips, Roland Pidoux, Alain Planes, Emmanuel Strosser, and many others.

As a committed artist, David Grimal has founded Les Dissonances in 2004. It is a musicians' collective gathering soloists as well as chamber musicians or solos from great orchestras from all over Europe. They meet and share their passion and artistic ideal, setting up three different programmes per season.Their first disc, Verklärte Nacht by Arnold Schoenberg, Strauss Metamorphosen issued in 2007, an Ambroisie-Naïve production, earned them the triple acclaim of telerama(ffff), the BBC (BBC choice) and Arte Channel selection. Les Dissonances have already performed in prestigious seasons and have started performing in Europe.

In addition, David Grimal has enjoyed a rewarding collaboration with Georges Pludermacher in recitals over the past decade. They perform together all over the world. Their last disc "Reflection" issued in 2006 devoted to Debussy, Béla Bartók, Ravel has received large press acclaim (ffff telerama, 10 de répertoire recommandé Classica, ARTE sélection…). A new disc entitled Europa (George Enescu, B. Bartók, Janacek and Szymanovski) as well as the Sonatas and Partitas by J.S. Bach (BWV 1001-1006) for Naïve were released in 2009. Since Grimal is particularly fond of the quartet for its musical perfection, he has founded the Orfeo Quartet. They are preparing to record the complete Beethoven quartets.

David Grimal has recorded Schubert's complete sonatas with Valery Afanassiev and a disc dedicated to Dohnanyi chamber music for AEON along with Marc Coppey, Gérard Caussé and Michel Béroff (which earned them 10 in the magazine Repertoire). Franck and Srauss violin sonatas with Georges Pludermacher (Harmonia Mundi ). With his live recording of J.S. Bach's complete Sonatas and Partitas (BWV 1001-1006) for Transart he won the prestigious "strad selection"award. A film was produced by H White for Mezzo about seven pieces for solo violin written for him (Escaich, Zygel, Pauset, Tanada, Zur, Gasparov, Kissine). He is shortly to give the first time performance of a concerto written for him by Thierry Escaich with Orchestre National de Lyon as well as the first perfomance of a concerto by Brice Pauset with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Six new works for solo violin will be written for him by composers such as Hilborg, Connesson, Hersant, Fedele, Verrieres, Dalbavie.

David Grimal is regularly invited to give master-classes in Australia, Taiwan, as well as in many festivals like Pablo Casals in Prades and Les Arcs international music academy in France and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris.

David Grimal plays the Ex Roederer, Stradivarius (1710) lent by Fazenda Ipiranga, Mguaranesia / MG, Brasil. He was awarded the European Culture Prize at Wiener Musikverein in 1996. France made him Chevalier des Arts et Lettres in 2008.
